Gluten Free Gift Ideas

You've heard me talk about Lovely Lady skin, hair, and body care products in the past. They're one of my favorite companies, and I've used most of their products myself (as well as given them as gifts). I like them because they're all natural, organic, and gluten-free (the owner, Cheryl Caspi, developed the line because she herself has Celiac). They are also free of all sorts of terrible chemicals that are good to avoid (parabens, sulfates, phthalates, petroleum, artificial preservatives, dyes, and synthetic fragrances!). Now that's what I want to put on my skin! You can read more about the company and their philosophy here. And the premium quality ingredients in their formulas -- like pure, undiluted essential oils -- really perform! If you are fighting aging skin (unfortunately, that realistically means anyone age 30+), you'll love the results you get from the Lovely Lady products. I especially like their Everlasting Skin Toner and Everlasting-Argan Immortelle Facial Nutrient (which can also be used as a lip balm, cuticle salve, and eye cream). Both smell heavenly and are full of benefit-loaded ingredients that target sensitivity, dryness, and aging skin...to keep it looking beautiful. Skin gets extra-stressed as the humid days of... As you know, I've been trying to get the word out about the growing number of gluten free skin care lines. I just wanted to share a quick post today about one I've personally tried -- a wonderful skin care line that's free of gluten...and that I'm currently using (the company has a line of high-quality gluten free vitamin supplements, too, so read on). In the past 15+ years, I really started scrutinizing the skin care products I used. Good products can be expensive, and I wanted to make sure I was getting the most for my money. Just as I've always been very vigilant reading labels to find out what is in the foods I buy, I've also become more interested in what ingredients are in the personal care products I use. I've become aware of some of the harmful chemicals allowed in skin care, hair care, and cosmetics in this country -- ingredients that are not even allowed in Europe and other parts of the world. That's why I was excited to try Arbonne's skin care products. I'd heard a lot about them over the years from neighbors and friends. But it wasn't until recently that I decided... Read more →

Every so often, a company sends me samples of a gluten free product to try. Recently, I was contacted by My Dad's Cookies, a company I wasn't familiar with and whose products I'd never seen. I agreed to try them, and WOW...was I glad I did! These are the closest thing to traditional Italian bakery cookies I've seen (and they're gluten free, of course). The box arrived, and inside were small boxes of many of their gluten free cookie varieties: Raspberry Linser, Chocolatta, Black and White, Chocolate Sandwich, Vanilla Graham, Chocolate Chip Biscotti, Lemon Drop, and Chocolate Chip. I was so excited to put them all on a big platter to show my son (actually, both my sons...I knew the non-GF son would be just as excited about sampling as my Celiac son!). Needless to say, they passed our taste tests with flying colors! My favorite were the Raspberry Linzer, and my sons liked the Lemon Drop and Chocolatta (which reminded us of a small, round version of Pepperidge Farm's Milano cookies). My Dad's Cookies was started by Elan Malina to give children with Celiac the same cookie treats they see their friends enjoying. Because these cookies look and taste... Read more →

Recently I had the good fortune to be put in touch with Wendy Krakower, a friend of a friend who launched a much-needed allergy-friendly business. It's called The Food Allergy Kitchenware Company, and they sell stainless steel SERVING SPOONS with the words "Gluten Free" or "Peanut Free" stamped on the end of the handle. What a great idea! It makes things abundantly clear to anyone making -- or serving -- multiple meals, some of which may contain an allergen. For example, use them to stir gluten free pasta as you're preparing it -- or to serve items in a buffet setting. Even other family members, visiting relatives, or guests will be able to plainly see which utensil should be used for the Gluten Free or Peanut Free food. Wendy came up with the idea after way too many meals "ruined" (cross-contaminated) by a simple spoon mix-up. Has that ever happened to you? Wendy is planning to expand her line of allergy-friendly cookware, but for right now, the spoons are a great addition to your kitchen -- or a great gift for anyone you know who deals with Celiac Disease, gluten sensitivity, or a peanut allergy in their family. These are... Read more →

I always enjoy finding cool and unique gifts. My friend Diane Elbin from The WHOLE Gang website recently came up with an ingenious gift for anyone who appreicates good food -- and it's here just in time for your early Holiday shopping! Diane is a professional recipe developer, chef, cookbook author, and gluten free health coach. Diane created what's essentially a beautiful Cookbook Desk Calendar of 12 cards featuring mouth-watering photos of gluten free (and dairy free) meals, with the full, easy-to-follow recipes on back. There's a featured recipe for each month, and the 12 cards are contained in a CD case that flips open into a stand for display. Showcase the month's calendar, and then flip the card over to try the lucious recipe. In addition to being gluten free and dairy free, each recipe comes with specific instructions if you desire to modify it to be vegetarian, vegan, or Paleo. I'm literally salivating over some of the photos and recipes: Jicama Tacos and Tostadas, Little Lasagne Flowers, Easy Layered Mexican Casserole, Summer Vegetable Rosettes, and Cashew Cream Yam Cannelloni, to name my "must-try" favorites. Even though they may sound or look fancy, the preparation instructions look surprisingly simple.... Read more →
