Gluten Free Giveaways

Have you ever heard of Sweet Note gluten free bagels? I hadn't...until recently. Fortunately, their distribution has expanded to include CVS, Whole Foods, Shop Rite, Dean & Deluca, MOM's Organic Market, Door to Door Organics, and Weis (but not all locations of these stores -- enter your zip on this page of their website to find the closest location to you). Their "claim to fame," so to speak, is that they have created the first authentic, New York-syle bagel that is gluten free (AND free of the top 8 common food allergens). I thought about that statement, and YES, they are right. They are authentic, in terms of look, texture, and taste. You'd never believe they were gluten free, much less free of other allergens, too. While our family buys other gluten free bagels, we have yet to find one that comes close to a traditional bagel. Some are like eating a big round-shaped piece of tasteless bread, others are tasty but not really what you remember bagels tasting like, and still others use a lot of bean flour, which I don't care for (weird aftertaste). These bagels are smaller, denser, crusty on the outside, and chewy on the inside... Read more →

You've heard me talk about Lovely Lady skin, hair, and body care products in the past. They're one of my favorite companies, and I've used most of their products myself (as well as given them as gifts). I like them because they're all natural, organic, and gluten-free (the owner, Cheryl Caspi, developed the line because she herself has Celiac). They are also free of all sorts of terrible chemicals that are good to avoid (parabens, sulfates, phthalates, petroleum, artificial preservatives, dyes, and synthetic fragrances!). Now that's what I want to put on my skin! You can read more about the company and their philosophy here. And the premium quality ingredients in their formulas -- like pure, undiluted essential oils -- really perform! If you are fighting aging skin (unfortunately, that realistically means anyone age 30+), you'll love the results you get from the Lovely Lady products. I especially like their Everlasting Skin Toner and Everlasting-Argan Immortelle Facial Nutrient (which can also be used as a lip balm, cuticle salve, and eye cream). Both smell heavenly and are full of benefit-loaded ingredients that target sensitivity, dryness, and aging skin...to keep it looking beautiful. Skin gets extra-stressed as the humid days of... Have you attended any of the gluten-free Expos around the country? There are several companies that host them, and we share them on our Dine Gluten Free mobile app, under GF Events. Unfortunately, if you don't live in a city where they're held (and aren't in the position to travel to one), you're out of luck. Or maybe you're like me…there's a good one held annually here in the Washington, DC area, but I haven't always been able to attend, due to family commitments and other scheduling conflicts. It's reasons like these that inspired the folks at Simply Gluten-Free magazine to launch a VIRTUAL Gluten-Free EXPO…one that you can attend right from the comfort of your own home -- and at any time that's convenient for you! Although not exactly like being "on the floor" of a live expo, you'll enjoy many of the same benefits…access to free samples, coupons, and engaging information from gluten-free experts. The team at Simply Gluten-Free has been hard at work registering vendors (if you haven't yet registered and are interested, contact Tracy Karp at 727-738-5735, or cell 727-288-1944). Every day more vendors are added to the Expo. And even though it's still a "work... Read more →

Those of you who've been following this Blog for a while know that one of my favorite gluten-free friendly chains is Burtons Grill. Although we don't have a location right near us, we've been lucky enough to visit several of their locations when traveling to the northeast (Massachusetts and Connecticut) and recently had the good fortune of dining at their location in Charlottesville, Virginia. This month, Burtons Grill is celebrating their 10-year anniversary (and they unveiled a beautiful new website). What began 10 years ago as one location in Hingham, Massachusetts has now grown into a 10-location restaurant group. From now until May 10, all Burtons Grill locations will be offering vouchers, loyalty prizes, flash sales, and sampling events (check out their Special Events page for details). When you dine at any of their locations, you'll have a chance to "roll the dice" for instant prizes and giveaways. This anniversary falls right in the middle of Celiac Awareness Month, and that's another reason to celebrate. Burtons Grill has unveiled a new Spring and Summer Menu that includes new "gluten sensitive" items. For those of you who've dined at any Burtons Grill, you know they already have one of the most... If you're gluten free, it's hard to beat the sheer thrill of discovering gluten-free friendly destinations. It's absolute heaven to discover a destination where you can dine on gourmet gluten-free specialties for every meal without worry. If it's in Tuscany, Italy, it's even better…. Some of you may recall the week-long gluten-free culinary events hosted by Jovial Foods (maker of divine gluten-free pasta and sauces) at a historic 18th century Tuscan villa. They hold these events once or twice a year -- Fall and late Spring -- and every time I write about it, it's pure torture. That's because attending one of these unique gluten-free culinary weeks is on my own personal Bucket List. Unfortunately, however, these gluten-free getaways are typically scheduled during times of the year when our kids are in school. But someday, perhaps…. If you're lucky enough to have the flexibility to travel in October, a particularly beautiful month in Italy, you'll want to consider treating yourself to this special vacation. And, in fact, you may not need to treat yourself…Jovial Foods may just treat you to a complimentary visit. Between now and June 30, 2015, you can enter their drawing for a free week (airfare and... Every so often, a company sends me samples of a gluten free product to try. Recently, I was contacted by My Dad's Cookies, a company I wasn't familiar with and whose products I'd never seen. I agreed to try them, and WOW...was I glad I did! These are the closest thing to traditional Italian bakery cookies I've seen (and they're gluten free, of course). The box arrived, and inside were small boxes of many of their gluten free cookie varieties: Raspberry Linser, Chocolatta, Black and White, Chocolate Sandwich, Vanilla Graham, Chocolate Chip Biscotti, Lemon Drop, and Chocolate Chip. I was so excited to put them all on a big platter to show my son (actually, both my sons...I knew the non-GF son would be just as excited about sampling as my Celiac son!). Needless to say, they passed our taste tests with flying colors! My favorite were the Raspberry Linzer, and my sons liked the Lemon Drop and Chocolatta (which reminded us of a small, round version of Pepperidge Farm's Milano cookies). My Dad's Cookies was started by Elan Malina to give children with Celiac the same cookie treats they see their friends enjoying. Because these cookies look and taste... Read more →

Rockfish Seafood Grill, with 13 locations in Texas, is a must-try spot if you're gluten free. You won't be bored with starters like Mexican Shrimp Martini, Ahi Tuna Nachos, or Roasted Jalapeno Cream Soup! Several entree salads grace the Gluten Free Menu, along with everyone's favorite fish selections, prepared either grilled or blackened with a choice of plenty of gluten free sides. And this isn't an ordinary preparation of fish, either...5 different sauces -- all gluten free -- suit any taste or mood. How about trying their unique Pontchartrain Sauce? (Perhaps you can, if you win the $25 Gift Card...more on that at the bottom of this post.) If you're more of a land-lubber, no worries...there's a Flat Iron Steak (which can also be combined into a "Field and Stream" combo with shrimp or scallops). There's also chicken, served grilled or blackened. And don't forget the gluten free creme brulee for dessert! If you visit on a Wednesday or Saturday, you'll also benefit from the half-priced bottles of wine! Throughout the month of July, Rockfish is offering Wild Alaskan Salmon (order it grilled or blackened for it to be gluten free). For every wild salmon entree sold in July, Rockfish... Read more →

Picazzo's Organic Italian Kitchen, a popular chain of five Arizona restaurants, sets the bar high for food with a focus on taste and quality -- and an impressive range of healthy, gluten free offerings. In fact, Picazzo's has what is arguably one of the most extensive menus of gluten free options available at an Italian restaurant. I kid you not when I say it would be worth a trip to Arizona just to dine at a Picazzo's Organic Italian Kitchen! (Read on to learn how you can win a $25 Gift Card to use at one of their restaurants...). Years ago, Picazzo's switched all their pasta to a gluten free variety, and just recently, they made the switch to RP's Pasta, a fresh (not dried) variety of gluten free pasta that also happens to be free of GMOs (which is becoming more important to many consumers, including myself). In fact, this is one of the reasons the owner of Picazzo's, Rick Freedman, decided to make the switch to RP's Pasta. He liked the texture and taste profile -- as well as the fact that it did not contain GMOs. Picazzo's uses five of their pasta products, including their gluten free... Read more →

If you're like many people in the gluten free community, you may be trying to avoid other grains besides just wheat. Or maybe you're trying to adapt recipes to make them more nutrient-dense by using alternative flours like almond flour. And I'm sure most of us would like to reduce the refined sugars in our diet. These are all great dietary goals, but where do you start? How do you make some of your favorite gluten free meals and baked goods without the gluten free flours you've come to rely on in recipes? Consulting a cookbook like Comfort Cooking Without Grains and Refined Sugars is a great place to start. Written by Eleanor Fahey of the Cooking Without Grains website, it contains over 200 recipes (both sweet and savory). I love how the recipes use ingredients like honey instead of sugar. And I especially like Eleanor's use of almond flour, which I've always found lends a wonderful flavor and moistness to recipes (in addition to adding protein, fiber, and healthy fats -- you can't beat that!). Recipes range from appetizers and dips...to breads and muffins...to meat and seafood...to condiments and salad dressings...and even vegetarian meals. I'd like to give you... Read more →

Named "Best Gluten-Free Restaurant Chain" in the 2012 About.com Gluten-Free Readers' Choice Awards, Ted's Montana Grill is a restaurant you'll want to check out, if you haven't already. My own family has dined there several times and is never disappointed. The menu and atmosphere have a unique twist...making you feel like you are, indeed, dining in "Big Sky Country." Now, in honor of Celiac Awareness Month, Ted's Montana Grill is offering a $30 Gift Card to the lucky winner of this week's random drawing (more details on how to enter can be found below...). Ted's Montana Grill is named after businessman, philanthropist, environmentalist, and avid outdoorsman Ted Turner. In 2002, he joined forces with famed restauranteur George McKerrow to open their first Ted's location in Columbus, Ohio, and the chain has since grown to over 40 locations in 16 states. Their focus is on the hearty food of "Big Sky Country" -- and they offer the biggest bison menu in the world (both steaks and burgers). But they know how to do seafood well, too, and in fact I've ordered fish the last couple times we've visited one of their restaurants. On their Gluten Free Menu, they offer both Cedar... Read more →
