Gluten Free Fast Food

Are you familiar with the hot -- literally hot -- new trend in pizza...custom-created, oven-fired pizza that cooks in just minutes? Well now there's a chain that offers this option to its gluten free guests, too. Yep. Pie Five Pizza Co, with locations in 7 states, lets you choose your crust (gluten free), your sauce, your toppings...and have your own mouthwatering pizza! If you don't live in one of the 7 states where Pie Five Pizza is currently located (Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia), you may still be in luck. They have locations in Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma "coming soon." Best of all, Pie Five Pizza's gluten free crust is made from ancient grains including teff, amaranth, and sorghum flours so the pizza isn't just gluten's nutritionally superior, with more vitamins, minerals, and fiber than most other gluten free pizzas. Almost all their toppings for the pizzas are gluten free, with the exception of meatballs and Alfredo sauce, and salads can be made in to-go bowls, as opposed to their usual bread bowls (all salad makings are gluten free, too, except the Caesar dressing). Although their restaurants are not dediated gluten free... Read more →

It seems pizza restaurants all over are hopping on the gluten free bandwagon and offering gluten free pizza...but if you're Celiac or gluten sensitive, it's important to ask the right questions before blindly devouring any "gluten free" pizza. After all, we've all heard the stories about cross contamination rendering supposedly "gluten free" pizzas unsafe for consumption -- except for those folks following a gluten free diet by choice. Pizza Pie Cafe is one place you can feel safe. If you live in Idaho or Utah, you have 11 Pizza Pie Cafe locations to choose from (and they'll be opening another one -- in West Jordan, UT -- in mid-February). Apparently, further expansion is planned as well. They follow safe practices to avoid cross contamination, including keeping the gluten free pizza crust in its own separate pan during preparation and cooking, using separate sauce and a separate ladle, changing gloves, and using a separate pizza cutter. Pizza Pie Cafe offers a gluten free version of its All You Can Eat pizza, pasta, and salad bar. And they will make ANY gluten free pizza (whichever combination of toppings you like), upon request. Even though there's a $2 upcharge for gluten free, it's... Read more →

Our family just returned from a quick trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania, home of The Hershey Company, Chocolate World, and the very fun amusement park bearing its name: Hershey Park. Although this amusement park is within a couple hours driving distance from our home in Northern Virginia -- a suburb of Washington, DC -- we hadn't been there for almost 5 years. Since we last visited, Hershey Park has added a great water park that promises fun for all ages. There's a large wave pool surrounded by a lazy river. Admission is included with general park admission, so you can enjoy both rides AND the water park all in the same day -- and all for the same price. In fact, we found their rates to be quite reasonable, considering all the park offers: tons of rollercoasters (12 in all), other rides, kiddie rides, shows, and the waterpark's wave pool, lazy river and numerous water slides. In fact, a 2-day pass to Hershey for any two days during the seaons (they don't need to be consecutive) is $75, less than the price of ONE day at any of Disney's parks in Orlando. Daily admission at Hershey Park is $56.95, with substantial... Read more →

Great news! Chuck E. Cheese's has announced in a Press Release that they will be test marketing a gluten free pizza and gluten free cupcakes at their Minnesota locations -- and will consider a nationwide rollout if all goes well. Unlike Domino's Pizza, which has been met with VERY mixed reactions over the past week based on the introduction of their own gluten-free pizza (which, by their own admission, is NOT Celiac safe, due to the very real potential for cross-contamination), Chuck E. Cheese's will use gluten-free pizza by Conte's Pasta, which comes frozen in a pre-sealed bake-in-bag that remains sealed when cooking and will be served with a personal pizza cutter at the family's table. Done correctly, this reduces any potential for cross contamination. Gluten free chocolate cupcakes from Fabe's All Natural Bakery will also come in pre-sealed, single serve packaging. I, for one, am thrilled. While I can only tolerate the noise level at Chuck E. Cheese's so often (!), it is great to know my husband and I might be able to take BOTH our sons there -- or send them to birthday parties there -- knowing our younger son with Celiac Disease will have something safe... Regional restaurant chain Fresh To Order, with locations in Georgia and Tennessee, has added a new salad to their Gluten Free Menu. You won't find this "Fall Seasonal Salad" mentioned on their website, but it's gluten-free and consists of arugula, goat cheese, candied walnuts, roasted butternut squash, house-made spiced pear chips, and citrus viniagrette. Wow! My husband took our kids to a Washington Nationals baseball game last week, and here is what he found: And apparently, he wasn't the ONLY one snapping a photo! He said there was a lot of buzz and excitement around this Gluten Free Concession Stand at Nationals Stadium, including other people taking pictures. What a sight for sore eyes! Located in Section 135, the Gluten Free Concession Stand offers gluten-free hot dogs on gluten-free buns (although curiously they do not offer hamburgers), gluten-free pizza, gluten-free mac-n-cheese, gluten-free burritos (that's a nice addition you don't typically see), chips, Cracker Jack's, and gluten-free Redbridge beer. My husband reported that there weren't any desserts offered at this particular stand but said Edy's ice cream and Gifford's ice cream were offered in other areas of the stadium. Both are gluten-free with the exception of obvious flavors containing brownie bits, cookie dough, or other "baked items" mixed in. A BIG thank you to Nationals Stadium to having one of the best gluten-free concessions at any ballpark, arena, or sporting venue. Keep up the good work...this is a fast-growing market, so you are making a wise business decision, as well as making MANY adults and... Read more →

Burger King Unveils Gluten-Free List

Earlier this month, Burger King put out a Press Release and unveiled a Gluten-Sensitive List for guests with "gluten sensitivity." Along with the burger patties, fries, salad, tacos, shakes, and soft-serve ice-cream, they also have their Tendergrill Chicken Breast Filet on the list (no bun of course). There are plenty of breakfast choices as well. I'd still like to call on Burger King and other fast-food chains to look into stocking gluten-free hamburger buns so people on gluten-free diets can eat a burger the old-fashioned way like everybody else. There's no need to "reinvent the wheel" and formulate their own gluten-free buns, either. There are many varieties of good gluten-free buns available (Kinnikinnick, for one), and it would simply entail having them on hand (even in the freezer) to quickly defrost when a gluten-free guest requests their burger with a gluten-free bun.
